look around you and you will see factions of people trying to make a difference. teaching our kids to be a better and more responsible generation, helping nations in need, you name it and it’s happening…selflessness at all levels. the other day elle’s girl scout daisy troop helped sell baked goods at our elementary school’s fundraiser for haiti. as i stood watching the girls and all of the parents pitching in – i was amazed. i look at the gates and there were signs everywhere – no trash tuesday (bring lunch in reusable containers), recycling center of bottles and cans, snack drive for kids without sufficient food, school clean-up day, a large donation box for clothes and shoes for Community of Change. this is all going on at once at a little elementary school in north san diego county. amazing!

i see beauty in things that are less than perfect. classic, symmetrical lines have their place – but my heart lies with the rough, the crooked and the funky. the underdog. growing up, our house was a mish-mash of funkiness. vintage rock posters, antique furniture recovered in vintage quilts, persian rugs – my mom had great taste. i personally think she was ahead of her time. i have inherited her collections but my most prized is the collection of ceramics made by my paternal grandmother, lotte. lotte was from germany and tapped into her unique and amazing skill as a ceramicist in her 30′s. a stay-at-home mom looking for a hobby – next thing she knew she was a full-blown artist make the most beautify ceramics around. they aren’t perfect or symmetrical – but funky, raw and like no other. it astounds me to think they were made over 40 years ago. they hang all over my house – i love them. they constantly remind me that beauty lies in imperfection.

i wasn’t even expecting it – it crept up on me and bonked me over the head…yes it’s here again, for the third time – it’s our household princess phase! seeing as i have three girls, it is a phase that i am all too familiar with. brittsy is in full-fledged princess mode, insisting on her princess gown and plastic high heels wherever we go. each of my girls went through their princess phase – not sure where they got it, because we aren’t big on making it happen. it’s some primordial instinct they each had – but of course each did it her own way. jette was into snow white – the dark horse with her primary colored gown. elle was into sleeping beauty – bubble-gum colored dresses in all their glory and sweetly talking to animals. now brittsy is into “cinderelli” – helplessly waiting on her big sisters (kidding). she wears her icy blue gown to sleep, to ride her ‘cooter (= scooter), to the grocery store and wherever else she can get away with. she sees a picture of cinderelli and yells really, really loud “dats me!” i’m sure they could do a “princess test” – something akin to a rorschach test, that could tell us a lot about ourselves based upon the princess we most identify with. i think i probably identify with jasmine – i always wanted black hair. and how cool is her outfit and jewelry?

i am now wearing my necklaces either really long (30″) or short (16″) – nothing in between. and of course, layered and together – a mix of gold, brass and sterling and a few sparkles thrown in for good measure. anything goes, right? my motto has been to pile it on! i especially love wearing long necklaces since they peak out from under my scarves and dress up my 3/4 length, wintery jackets – i would hate to hide the jewels under all of the cold-weather clothes. so fun and playful! meet “bewitched” – the latest of our layering necklaces. three varying size hand stamped discs, a date tag and a cluster of sparkly, pretty stones. it’s funky enough that it spices up your outfit but classic enough that it looks fab with everything. you will love it… check out the hand stamped bewitched necklace in the shop!

after a week of pretty dismal weather, i’m ready for some cheer. so i decided to buy some pretty flowers just to brighten our day – it’s amazing what $6 can do! i bought some red spray roses and then picked some hot pink camellias from our backyard. we have a haphazard collection of little vases – sugar bowls missing their lids, old trophies, funky little creamers – that i like to put flowers in. we scattered little vases around the house, infusing a blast of red in each room. it sure brightened the house and the girls loved it. especially elle. she is my flower girl – she appreciates all things beautiful.

i couldn’t do it. i just couldn’t. there were too many awesome entries and travel is my soft spot – i love, love travel. so i turned to ms. lisa h., the first give-away winner (remember “not-so-plain-jane?”). lisa has been a faithful follower of my blog (thank you lisa!) and it just seemed right, so i asked lisa to be the judge. lisa lives in michigan – here’s a bit of background on our guest judge:
I grew up at the beach with my own “three sisters” in Manasquan, NJ and live today with my husband, three kids, assorted pets and friends in Plymouth, Michigan. I am a graphic designer, art teacher and mother of two wonderfully-witty teenage boys and one very-pink and girlie kindergartener, Katie. Currently…..I am trying to get up the nerve to wear this soft blue vintage silk flower pin that I bought to infuse my beautifully classic (not frumpy, but not so funky either) wardrobe with some actual style. I think I just need to pin it on and go. Wish me luck.
and here is lisa’s winner…
It was hard to decide with all of the landmarks, languages and cultural imagery whirling around my little head, but I felt the Irish magic when I read Jen Lucero’s entry. You are not only drawn to Ireland, but your fellow Irishmen are drawn to you. Truly your other culture!
jen l. – step right up and e-mail me at zoe@threesistersjewelrydesign.com to claim your hand-stamped jewelry give-away. and lisa h., thank you for being a fabulous guest judge.

sometimes don’t you just want to be the “other-mother?” not the button-eye other-mother, but the mother who lets her kids sleep in and when they wake, asks sweetly “where shall we go today dears? disneyland? paris? hawaii? just let me know because you don’t have to go to school if you don’t feel like it.” or the other-mother who delivers a tray of beautifully decorated cake-cakes when her daughter is pushing her dinner around on the plate – “here dear, have a sticky sweet cake-cake. so much tastier than a pea.” or the other mother who gazes kindly at her two-year scribbling with a crayon on the wall “oh dear, that’s absolutely stunning. i think i will build a frame around it and keep it on the wall. you are a budding picasso.” yes – i long to be the other-mother. free of disciplining, feeding healthy, correcting … it gets so exhausting. meet “the 0ther-mother necklace.” coraline-blue charms – a london blue topaz set in sterling silver with delicate diamond chips, a sterling stamped initial charm and a cluster of liquid silver and coraline-blue hand, cut stone charms. yes, it’s ok to be the “other-mother” once in a while. the other-mother hand stamped necklace is now available in the shop! take a gander.
