what does it mean to you?

i see beauty in things that are less than perfect. classic, symmetrical lines have their place – but my heart lies with the rough, the crooked and the funky. the underdog. growing up, our house was a mish-mash of funkiness. vintage rock posters, antique furniture recovered in vintage quilts, persian rugs – my mom had great taste. i personally think she was ahead of her time. i have inherited her collections but my most prized is the collection of ceramics made by my paternal grandmother, lotte. lotte was from germany and tapped into her unique and amazing skill as a ceramicist in her 30′s. a stay-at-home mom looking for a hobby – next thing she knew she was a full-blown artist make the most beautify ceramics around. they aren’t perfect or symmetrical – but funky, raw and like no other. it astounds me to think they were made over 40 years ago. they hang all over my house – i love them. they constantly remind me that beauty lies in imperfection.

That’s why iI love being an art teacher – a witness to the creative process that comes from the heart. I am enjoying the pureness of the preschool creations in my classroom now, but I equally love the middle school student art that they don’t think is so hot that I just gush over – the way the paint “mistake” splattered in just the right spot, or how the orange crept into the yellow that wasn’t quite dry…good stuff!
