where would you go? a new give away! …

Jan 19

i have a theory that everyone relates closely with a different culture for some reason or another.  my mom thought she was japanese – she went to japanese school, our house was decorated in asian art and there was a pot of rice always sitting on our counter.  my friend brigitte is a true francophile (even though she’s german!) and goes to france every chance she gets.  then i love the indian culture.  i love indian food, indian design, indian culture – it exemplifies beauty to me.  what about you?  is there a culture that you strongly identify with, a culture that fascinates you?  a place that you really, really want to travel to?  what is your “other culture” and why?  i want to know!  i made a necklace in honor of  “the other culture” – it’s a longitude/latitude necklace.  my good friend robin gave me the idea for this necklace and it’s taken me two years to make it!  thanks rob-o.  i will be giving away this necklace before it’s available on the site.  post a comment and tell me what culture fascinates and/or where you want to travel and WHY!  deadline is friday, january 22nd. dream big and have fun thinking about it…c’mon, don’t be shy!

I would say Paris…I’ve always dreamed of going there and being proposed to or going for my honeymoon…it would be great to have a necklace that could help me manifest that dream! :-) What a great idea!

I think Bali. India was the apple of my eye for many years for it’s beauty and spirituality. I went there years ago and it was a life changing experience. Now…my eyes are set on Bali…for the natural beauty, spirituality, the celebration of the sacred in every day life.
How lovely to set a flower at the foot of a lovely statue surrounded by lush foliage!

Wow…this is a hard one. I love Jamaica because of the warm water, the great vibes, and the relaxation! But then I love Paris and I have told myself if ever I have money to take a trip I am taking Shawniece no matter how young she is to Paris. I can just see us getting a baugette, cheese, wine…sparkling water for Shawniece and we are just laying below the Eiffel Tower on a big blanket loving life!! I would take lots of pictures and make them into postcards and send them to everyone we know!!!

So Paris with Shawniece would be where I go!!!

Zoe, mine would have to be Japanese, like your mother, definitely. I’ve always been drawn towards Asian culture: art, literature (Amy Tan – love her!), design, and cuisine. One of my favorite books/movies: Memoirs of a Geisha. So when Julie and I were told that the infant we were being place with for adoption was Japanese, I was ecstatic! I study Buddhism principles, and Sydney understands that Buddha was a phenomenal teacher. And I’m so proud that my 6 year old has been using chopsticks – she loves sushi – for a while now. It’s sweet to see someone smiling at her chopstick dexterity when we’re in a restaurant! Someday, we’ll take Japanese together. And I’ve promised her that we will visit her biological family’s place of origin: Okinawa. When I look at my daughter, I see silky smooth, shiny black hair, and beautiful, dark chocolate almond eyes…her middle name is Japanese, to honor her heritage: “Takara,” which means “treasure” or “precious,” because she is truly, just that. My precious treasure.

Ireland !! I am 75% Irish and, of course, very proud. I have actually traveled quite a bit and although there are other places with beautiful art museums, culture, architect and land, I am always drawn to everything Irish. I always claim that it is in my blood or at least the green eyes. I have been to Ireland and even bent over backwards, hanging upside down, to kiss the Blarney Stone. I pub hopped and drank many warm beers and roamed about the country side. Although Scotland holds the lush green hills that you would imagine to be in Ireland, I still feel more drawn to Ireland. All of my favorite books seem to be written by Irish authors or take place in Ireland. I just read a great series about the Irish Fae – I love all the mystical lore of Ireland. There is something so magical and carefree about their legends. And nothing like listening to an Irish lilt or Irish music. It has such depth of heart and tradition. It is funny because Travis has said he has been drawn to Irish people all his life. All of his best friends are Irish and now he is married to an Irish woman and has Irish dominant girls. He loves it! Of all the places in the world I have been, the place I want to share with my family the most is Ireland. I want to know if they feel the magic in their blood too!

I am of Swiss lineage…you probably don’t know this, Zoe. I’ve always identified with my “roots” because i’ve struggled to be a fair, nonjudgmental person…neutral, just like Switzerland! :-) While i doubt i’ll ever be able to climb the alps, i would love to visit the canton where my ancestors lived…they were the tobler’s..yes! The chocolate family…what could be better than that? :-) I would be willing to settle for samples! te he he Love your blog Zoe!

Although this is a tough one to narrow down (I love traveling!), I’d have to say Italy, and specifically Florence and Santa Margarita Ligure. Florence for the amazing art and architecture…and the dining…and the boots (love their shoes!). And Santa Margarita for the coastal smallness of it all, the beautiful water & diving, the memories of my honeymoon…and of course the food! Especially the plate of seafood risotto at a hole in the wall diner by the docks, that was so mouthwateringly good that I wouldn’t be rushed, not even to be in time for the second dive of the day, and waved my new husband back to the boat with glass of wine in hand saying: “I’ll be here when you return, savoring the last bite.” How can you not love a culture that created risotto and gelato? where it seems that every family run restaurant has a house wine that’s great? Thanks, Zoe! you’ve inspired my first ever blog comment…and inspired my next menu :)

I have always wanted to just spend the summer in Greenwich Village in New York in a little co-op. I love the idea of being able to be a free spirit and just watch the streets and people of New York City.

My Mom and Dad often took trips to Branson Missouri when Dad was alive. He would laugh so hard he could hardly talk as he told me about his favorite commedian. I’ve never been to Branson, but I would love to take my Mom back there someday. I will have her show me her and dad’s favorite places, and walk their favorite walks. I know that in some small way it will make me feel re-connected to him, and reflect on the good times.

I knew as soon as I read your blog- I would drop everything and fly to France in a second! If my kids could get themselves off to school,if my husband could handle my part of our life and if work would just wait for a couple days! Two years ago in April I kept having dreams I was in France, just visiting the little shops, eating drinking coffee… and then I would wake up! I told my husband “I can’t wait to go to bed I am in France every night!” I found airfare at that time and tried to convince my best girlfriend we needed to go but those darn obligations!! Around the same time I went to Goodwill and found an original “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” I haven’t mastered it yet! Always a work in progress! I loved reading everyone’s posts~ I now want to fly to New York, Italy, Everywhere!

I would have to say that I would stay put. Not that I’m not inspired, intrigued, curious and envious about other cultures and other parts of the world but I’ve lived elsewhere several times and always come back to San Diego. We have the phenomenal Pacific Ocean outside our front doors, the San Bernadino mountains a short hop away, we have Julian and Old Town, Cardiff and Coronado, Balboa Park and Anza Borego. Hillcrest – need I say more? I also needn’t mention the weather but with this week’s activity I must – can you say Victory at Sea? Have you been in San Diego in October – the tourists are gone, the kids are back in school and the weather is still amazing for a Sunday afternoon at the beach. We have the best mexican food this side of the border, the Pannikan and VG Donuts. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.
Nope, I would stay. Dorothy nailed it – there’s no place like home.

I would have to say Hawaii & Bali. I’ve been blessed to be able to visit both places & everytime I’m there, I’ve just felt at home. The warmth of the air, the beauty of the land & people, the yummy food. I just feel like I’m ‘home” when I’ve been there. Bali, especially, was an amazing time–3 weeks for my honeymoon. I dream of going back there so I can experience the culture & people again.

London, London London! There is so much history right in the heart of this amazing city. I love navigating the Underground – it’s such an adventure, yet not the least bit intimidating. Everyone takes the Underground; hip young things, elderly blokes with walking canes, tourists from all over the world and just plain ordinary people. Plus you can have Thai food as good as in Bangkok, Indian food as good as in Dehli, Turkish food as good as in Istanbul – you get the picture. Plus, there is nothing like shopping in the Portobello street market, maybe taking a stroll along the Thames, then heading to a Pub on a blustery day, taking off your hat and coat and ordering a pint!

let me start off by saying what a great idea! i am not well traveled, so i think my affinity for other cultures started because of my mother (post father), not a gypsy, but probably one in a previous life. hence the name of my book, ‘food from my mother’s lovers’ (when i finally get the guts and know how to write). I believe food is the key to everything, not only surviving, but it shapes and molds cultures….if you think about all the beautiful colors of spices used in morocco, and india (just to name a few) they go hand in hand with the beautiful, vibrant colors of sari’s worn by women in india, moroccan textiles, and architecture. there are so many places i would love to visit, namely the two i mentioned, and thanks to a few of, ‘my mother’s lovers’ (don’t get the wrong idea) would love to visit other countries in the middle east, africa, and asia. let’s start off along the 33rd parallel, and eat our way through : )

    Dear Zoe:

As a California girl who has lived her entire life here, my fist big European adventure
included Rome, Venice and Florence Italy. The moment I arrived, I had an immediate connection and felt I may even had lived a past life there!

    What I love:

The language: It is incredibly romantic, beautiful and so much fun to speak.
The food: “Real” Italian food is sumptuous and hearty, fresh and full of flavor. Comfort food at its best.
The women: Elegant and refined, dripping in 18K gold jewelry from head to toe. They wear the highest heels and walk perfectly in them. The loveliest and most stylish people on the planet.
The artisans: Magnificent painted frescos, Florentine stationary, Murano glass and more.
The monuments: Pantheon, Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Basilica. Awesome and unforgettable sights.
The music: Dreamy and passionate, you can lose yourself in the melodic rhythms.
Fashion: Wearable art. Gucci, Versace, Prada, Armani, Valentino, Ferragamo. The list of incredible Italian design houses is awesome.

Most of all. . . the attitude. There is a wonderful vibe in Italy. . . the people are so passionate and full of life. They inspire me and awaken a side of me that is not always easily expressed. Hopefully, I will return again to what feels like my homeland!

    Ciao!
    Laurie
