happy memorial day!

May 31

we really had a great weekend – we went to five events over three days.  wooh!  we’re wiped-out.  but the girls had a blast.  they played for 72 hours straight – BBQing, swimming, sleep over, party, party, party!  my aunt and uncle and cousins had an awesome memorial day party.  one thing my family doesn’t lack is a funny, humorous perspective on life.  they had an “americana” party in my uncle’s 6,000 square foot “workshop.”  it’s bigger than our house and pretty darn impressive.   he’s organized, clean and if anything ever breaks – he’s the first to offer to fix it.  he has a wall of nuts and bolts, rows of every kind of liquid, grease, goop, whatever it’s called to fix your car.  i am planning a coup and thinking of moving “three sisters jewelry” into the workshop (he doesn’t know this yet).  he has a dune buggy hanging from a lift, his harley roped off with police tape and he even pulled my cousin’s trailer inside to make it homey.  they served american foods: chili dogs, burgers, bean dip from a can, fritos and mom’s apple pie. the only thing missing was the cheese whiz.  they played some kick-ass country music and whooped it up.  i was overly impressed and had laughed pretty hard!  i love my family – they’re fun and so super cool.  my cousins even flew in from colorado to surprise everyone!  it was a great day!

friendships…

May 30

having great friends is so important to me.  i think that because i am an only child, i have created my network of friends and turned them into family.  if i make a good friend – you can bet that we will be friends for life.   i thank my mom for always talking to me about being a good friend and the importance of friendships and loyalty.  on saturday, we went to my friend diana’s house for a BBQ.  i have know this group of friends for almost 20 years.  we have been through so much together.  we all met when we were students, single and working at a beach-side cafe.  it was a special time in my life and i made a lot of lasting friendships -we had some fun, fun times together!  although we only get together a few times a year as families, it’s like no time has passed when we’re together.  it’s so cool to watch our children play together, the next generation!  these ladies are all so special to me – three of us are only children, we have created our extended family.  i am always here for them as i know they are for me!

perfect corn on the cob…

May 29

i love in-season corn on the cob.  it’s so easy to cook and tastes like summer when you bite into it.  my friend cindy taught me how to make perfect corn-on-the-cob and i’ve been making it this way ever sense.   super tender and sweet.  to make:  boil a large pot of water with two tablespoons of sugar.  shuck your corn right before adding it to the water.  bring water back to a boil, cover, turn off the heat and let sit for 5 minutes.  remove corn from the water – roll it in a pan with melted butter, salt and serve!  for a little something extra – throw on the grill and char a bit.  perfect!

willow…

May 28

willow, our ferocious hunting cat, is taking some time out.  when i saw her relaxing in her little basket it struck me that i need to take a clue from her – relax, enjoy the day and appreciate the small things… looking forward to a weekend of fun with the girls – we will be hanging with friends and family.  can’t wait!

still tired…

May 27

yesterday, i helped chaperone elle’s field trip to sea world.  WHEW!  we herded eight girls around sea world – they were a lively bunch.  we touched the sting rays, saw the seal and otter show, checked out the sharks and penguins and hey!  we caught the shamu show.   it was so impressive that i even cried during shamu’s show (NOT kidding – don’t laugh).   maybe i cried from exhaustion, i don’t know.  anyway, it was a great day.  but well…i’m still exhausted!

happy birthday niels…

May 26

today was niels’ birthday… my gemini, always keeping me on my toes with that dual personality.  niels and i are a great pair – he keeps it interesting, he is fun and FUNNY and he’s got that edge that well, i just love… anyway, i had a busy day so my window to get the house “birthday ready” was very small – the girls helped with the streamers.  they each made him a present  – elle glued her favorite Littlest Pet Shop to a rock and painted it with puffy paint.  jette painted a rock like a lady bug so niels could use it at work as a paperweight.  brittsy licked some of the icing off his cake.  I made him an “arizona sioux” necklace since he has been asking for one for months.  we ordered him a cake from my obsession du jour, azucar, – a confection of passion fruit, raspberries and burnt marshmallow icing (i’m not sure if anything smells better than a burnt marshmallow).  we were ready!  the minute he walked in the door from work, he was accosted and had to open his presents on the spot!  the girls get SO excited about our birthdays -  it’s important to them that our day is fun, exciting and special.  they can feel it!  we had a great night – went to our favorite neighborhood haunt, the birdhouse (turkish cuisine) and then watched “hotel for dogs.”  happy birthday niels….

monday morning…

May 24

i was struck this morning as i looked at our “chair” that hangs the girls bags, accessories, toys and junk.  the chair sits by our back door and is a receptacle for their stuff.  we don’t have a mudroom, our house is small, and i figure if we did, there would be MORE junk collecting in its place.  i like our chair -  it’s kind of cool looking, although sometimes i think it’s a nuisance and cluttered and don’t really appreciate its purpose.  the colors are pretty, each bag reflects their personality (can you figure which belongs to each?) and well, it signifies the life of three young girls.  i kind of like that chair.

maiden voyage…

May 23

we set sail this weekend – taking our trailer on the road.  what a time we had!  we went with two other families and well….it couldn’t have been better!  the kids played non-stop until they collapsed into bed.  they ate yummy food, thought of creative, fun things to do (playing with a bag of rocks – fun!), and accumulated about an inch of dirt.  they had free reign to play, bike, fish, and just hang out.  it was great!  we didn’t have too many newbie issues with our trailer and came home with a long list of things we need for our new vacation home.  one thing that i love about camping is having the time to sit, read my stack of magazines (home decorating are my favs) and dream about the future.  i rarely have time to just sit.  i find that when i have time to sit and reflect, some of my most inspirational times are born…  here’s to many years of camping as family!!!  what do you like to do with your family for fun?  would love to hear!
