what i love about bass lake #4 – water fun

Jul 23

i love the water.  at bass lake, we spend about 90% of our time in the water, on the water, by the water.   it’s so freeing and fun.  the girls share the same love of the water – it’s so great to see them out there, enjoying it.  one of my favorite parts about bass lake is relaxing on my float with the sun shining down and floating.  it’s bliss.

Just caught up on all the blogs…what an amazing place. i will have to elaborate on our vaca traditions when I have more time to type, but when we used to drive to Emerald Isle in NC from Northern Virginia, we drove through the east coast equivalents of your little lottery towns. Always people selling watermelons like 6″ from the curb and people just rockin’ on their porch rockers like there was nothing else more important to do. But then you hit this point, right after the tobacco fields where you can start to smell that sweet salty ocean air. Doesn’t matter how hot or humid it is…AC off – windows down – all the rest of the way. Just the smell gives you that perfect little adrenaline boost to make it the last part of the trip after driving for 7 hours. That must be the perfect magical vacation distance, 7 hours. Miss it all more than I can say. Michigan has beautiful beaches, but this girl grew up with salt in her water!

would love to hear about your vacay traditions. i think a traditional vacation place is so important – i have always wanted to go to emerald isle. i’ve heard it’s beautiful. and yes, understand the importance of salt in the hair. that’s me too, growing up on the beach in southern cal. it’s home :)

All of these pictures remind me of growing up. We had a home in Lake Arrowhead and every Friday night we would head up for the weekend. Summers were spent weeks at a time in our home away from home. We would water ski, sail and play by the docks every day with our Arrowhead friends. It was a whole second world for us. In reality, the water was usually freezing cold, the waves too rough during the day to ski (so 7am we usually went), and when offered to move there and go to high school we all turned our parents down. But, somehow all I remember was it being the best, most wonderful part of my childhood. I miss it so often and think how much I would love to do the same for my family. Now, we head up every Winter to “snowy mountain” and rent an 8 bedroom house for my extended family, cousins and their kids. We spend 4 fun filled days in the snow, sledding and tubing. It is still Lake Arrowhead, so I get to visit a place I love so much and it has become our new famly tradition. I just need to make the effort to get them all up there in the summer and on the lake. Maybe next year. Our other family tradition is dinner, ice skating and hot chocolate at the Hotel Del every Christmas Eve. So beautiful and festive.
