i came across this picture today. i can’t believe this little window of time has closed. britt was a princess for all of three months and now it’s gone. poof! replaced by silly-band-collecting and squishies. i’m feeling kind of sad.

a while back ago i started writing about our new camping trailer. we have three fun trips planned over the next several months and we can’t wait! deb from corvalis gave me a great idea – why not make a special journal that we keep in the trailer to write about our memories and times together during our camping adventures? what a great idea! thanks deb! so i ordered a red journal from la paperie on etsy. i copied my mom’s favorite poem from “the prophet” and glued it on the opening page. we have a few pictures already added but our next trips will be the first where we will make the journal with items that we find during our trips and include pictures of our friends and family camping together. i can’t wait to get this started! thanks deb for commenting on my blog and giving me a great idea. i appreciate it!

there are some things that i grew up with – my grandma’s fried chicken recipe, my mom’s bureau from the Mission Inn, my aunt’s tiny mother-of-pearl inlaid, chinoiserie jewelry box. these are collective memories that make me who i am. there are also those little things that aren’t as fancy, but just as important. the forgotten items that have been part of my childhood that may not have seemed important when i was small, but now that i am a mom….well, they are immensely important to me. my grandma’s “button tin” is one of those items. my grandma would throw stray buttons into this tin and it was full of mismatched, pretty buttons. i would play with this tin for hours while she would sew. my mom took over my grandma’s sewing machine so the button tin came along too. it now sits on my shelf. the buttons are long gone – part of arts & crafts projects for the kids, donated to preschool classrooms. but the memories are not. it doesn’t look like much to someone on the outside but to me it is representative of my childhood – happy and safe memories.

sadly i’m not too spontaneous in my old age. my days are tightly planned around work, kids, hubby and home. it leaves little room for that “go wild” side of me that existed when i was younger (but still lurking in there somewhere!). so when our friends called and asked if niels and i wanted to go to a private party that evening where dave matthews would be performing we FREAKED out. yeah! we begged for childcare, threw on our party clothes and off we went. and what a night! to see dave matthews perform under a full moon in a Qualcomm parking lot was quite….um….amazing. he is immensely talented. just dave and his cohort tim reynolds and their two guitars on stage. mesmerizing. they even passed out little chocolates to the audience – it was a perfect night! live music and chocolate with my man. now we have to build up steam for our next concert…. tomorrow night – the black keys!

britt was really naughty yesterday. she destroyed the girls’ room in search of candy. so i told her “no dessert for being naughty and destructive.” what did jette do? she hid a piece of candy under britt’s pillow for her to have when i wasn’t looking. yes, i should be annoyed. but how can i be when she’s just looking out for her sister? that’s all i really want. for the girls to have each other’s back. i also had a good laugh when i saw the candy. sassy tart.
