today elle turned seven. how the time has passed! elle is my sweet, kind-hearted child. i think that everyone who meets elle can’t resist her charm. she’s eternally positive and super funny. she’s eccentric, interesting and animals love her. i caught her talking to our “elf on the shelf” this morning. she was having a full-on conversation and i
thought that if the elf was going to speak to anyone, it would most definitely be elle. happy birthday sweet elle!

today i found britt laying a piece of gum on each wrapped present under the tree. when i asked her what she was doing she told me with a very serious face that the presents were hungry and needed something to eat.

i’m sure you have one in your house. that ONE christmas decoration that you love so much. probably something random to someone else, but so sentimental to you. it’s amazing that so many feelings and emotions can be wrapped up into something so small and fragile. year-upon-year of memories and traditions. my angel christmas decoration has been with me as long as i can remember. when i was little, it was my favorite ornament to hang. so pretty in her broken little dress, pieced back together with elmer’s glue. there are many memories tied to my little angel – “angel” was my mom’s nick name for me. so when my ornament comes out each year i have a good cry and think of my mom. wishing so badly she was with me and the girls and celebrating the holidays. luckily i have my little angel to watch over me.

my christmas list isn’t very long. in fact i always thought that niels got off easy when he married me. i rarely have a laundry list of gifts that i need and what i want is usually a bit random. i try and make it easy on everyone. i don’t want stress associated with my holiday gift – then it’s no fun. last year i wanted a vintage rock t-shirt. seemed easy enough. what is on my list this year? socks. every year i treat myself to a new pair of boots. i love boots – a lot. well this year i searched out a pair of oliver-twist style boots and found them. they dress down my sparkles and i like that. so what i want is some fun socks to wear with my boots that peak over the top and are a bit playful. as you know i don’t own tennis shoes so that means i don’t really own a lot of socks. i wear niels’ socks with my other boots since they don’t show. but it’s time for some socks of my own. i can’t wait until christmas morning!

the holidays are in full swing now. there is no denying it and we’re having heaps of holiday fun around here. until two years ago, my favorite holiday picture was one of me and my mom in front of our tree, heavied with tinsel and thick, large holiday lights. circa 1979. i love that picture – proudly holding my new barbie. well – that picture has been replaced and this is my favorite holiday, family photo. in fact, it’s my favorite photo that we own. it was taken two years ago and every single time i see it, i crack up. so perfect. happy holidays to you and your family – i hope it’s magical!

when i was little i was mesmerized by candy houses. i thought they were amazing and i envisioned myself, the size of a barbie, living inside and scooping-off icing for dinner, nibbling red hots for breakfast and sleeping on a bed of marshmallows. how wonderful life would be to live in a world of candy and pretty treats. we decorated our gingerbread house and i relived some of those memories. old memories, but happy memories. the same memories my kids will have in about thirty years.

i love the color red. it’s bright, festive, strong and fun. it’s been my favorite color since as long back as i can remember. so one of the things i love about christmas is that i get to decorate the tree in all red! red lights, red garlands and usually red ornaments. this year it’s a semi-red tree though since the kids pulled out all of my childhood ornaments and hung those instead. which is OK with me – but i do love a red tree. some may thing it’s a bit boring – but to me it’s fun.
